Frequently asked questions
Mapper · PNM Now · 20 October 2026
The short version: Distances are great-circle estimates. Award prices are not printed here. Ads and analytics wait for a yes.
- Why does flight distance matter for points and miles?
- On many partner tickets, redeemable miles are a percentage of distance flown. Some award charts still pick a price from a mileage band. U.S. elite programs mostly no longer count raw distance toward status, but several of them still derive partner elite credit from distance. Mapper shows the great-circle baseline for that math.
- Is Mapper’s distance the same number an airline will credit?
- Not always. Mapper reports the great-circle distance between airport coordinates. An airline may credit a published table value instead, and the path the airplane flies is usually longer than the great circle. Confirm the posting with the program.
- What is the difference between great-circle distance and flown distance?
- Great-circle distance is the shortest path on a sphere. Flown distance follows airways, weather, winds, and air-traffic control, so it is usually longer. Mapper draws the great circle. It does not draw the flown track. For New York–London the great circle is 3,442 miles.
- Does Mapper show an award price?
- No. A route page gives the great-circle miles so you can compare them with a published chart. It does not state an Avios or other award price. British Airways’ multi-carrier table prices a journey that connects two or more oneworld airlines; a nonstop on one airline is not priced from that table.
- How does Mapper estimate flight time?
- The printed cruise estimate is distance divided by 835 km/h, plus 30 minutes, rounded to the minute. On the website a model estimate can replace it after the page loads. Neither figure is a schedule. For New York–London that cruise estimate is about 7 hours 8 minutes on a 3,442-mile great circle.
- Do Delta, American, and United still award elite status by miles flown?
- Not on their own tickets. Delta Medallion status is MQD-only (Medallion Qualification Miles were retired on January 1, 2024). American status is Loyalty Points. United status is Premier Qualifying Points. Partner tickets can still use distance.
